Walnut Shade

Community Profile: Walnut Shade, Missouri
By Cole Currier
Walnut Shade is really a bedroom community of the Branson/Hollister area. It’s perfect for folks who want to live in the Ozark Hills, but don’t want to be too far from work, school, and shopping. Walnut shade is just about 10 minutes north of Branson and 30 minutes south of Springfield. It’s a wonderful place to live… I should know, I call Walnut Shade “home”!

Living in Walnut Shade
I live a pretty hectic lifestyle. My wife and I have two kiddos that are always going in different directions, I own a growing business, we are actively involved at our church… Our home in Walnut Shade is truly our getaway from the business of life – that’s why we love it. It is so worth the 15 minute drive from work. By the time you drive down the meandering highway and pull up to the house, you’re decompressed and just far enough from “city” life that you’re ready to relax. At the same time, if you forgot something at the office or grocery store, you’re only 10-15 minutes away.

Another great thing about Walnut Shade – many properties are located near Highway 65, which provides fast and easy access to Branson, and you’re only 20 minutes from Ozark and 30 minutes from Springfield! When we’re craving city life, we enjoy heading up to downtown Springfield for date night.

Walnut Shade residents are part of the award-winning Branson School District – one of the finest anywhere. The quality of facilities, teachers, and leadership is well recognized throughout the area. Academic achievement at Branson Schools continually exceeds state and national standards, and their focus of building character in students is truly unique. My children attend Branson Public Schools, and we are thrilled with the experience we’ve had. As a Branson High School Alumnus, I, too can attest to the quality of education offered at Branson.

In addition, there are excellent post-secondary education opportunities in the area. College of the Ozarks is a unique institution which is nationally recognized for their unique model where students do not pay tuition. Ozarks Technical Community College also offers programs at their Branson/Hollister campus. In addition, Missouri State University, my alma mater, is located just a short drive away – about 30 minutes north to Springfield.

Walnut Shade is an unincorporated city in Missouri with a VERY small population. How small? Well, let’s just say that I couldn’t even locate Walnut Shade in the Census Bureau’s statistics! The makeup of the demographic varies widely, as Walnut Shade is primarily a rural area, but there are a number of nice subdivisions that take advantage of the peace and quiet and views of the hills.

Just about the only retail in Walnut Shade is the Gateway Conoco station at Hwy 65 & 160, but don’t worry, Branson is only 10-15 minutes away and offers major retail stores like:

  • Wal-Mart
  • Target
  • Best Buy
  • K-Mart
  • Kohl’s
  • Belk Department Store
  • Bass Pro Shops
  • Home Depot
  • Lowe’s (in Hollister – our sister community)
  • TJ Maxx
  • Bed, Bath & Beyond
  • Petco
  • Books-A-Million
  • Staples

My Favorite Walnut Shade Hot Spots:
This is an easy one… The hot spot in Walnut Shade is your own back deck. Especially in the springtime when everything is in bloom or autumn when the leaves are at their peak fall colors. Also, there is a little-known spot in Walnut Shade where you can sip a sample of Ozark Mountain moonshine. Yes, that’s right, I said moonshine! Don’t worry, it’s all legal. Don’t miss the Copper Run Distillery for a true “taste” of the Ozarks!
